Coca Cola has adopted a new move to curb plastic use in its worldwide business. The company has decided to remove the plastic wrap and substitute it with paperboard packaging on all its cans in Europe. Coca Cola made a collaboration with Graphic Packaging International for a paper packaging technique called KeelClip. The company will introduce KeelClip packaging in its cans in the new year.
Initially, KeelClip cans will be available in Ireland, Poland, and the Netherlands. In 2021, these type of cans will be available in all the European countries.
European partners of Coca Cola had decided in October to remove plastic packaging and had abandoned hard to recycle plastic from their businesses. Initially, Coca Cola will invest $15 million in the KeelClip project. The company is estimating to reduce 2,000 metric tons of plastic and 3,000 tons of CO2 each year.
This will be a great initiative by Coca Cola to reduce harmful emissions in the environment. Graphic Packaging International’s KeelClip technology of removing plastic also allows using a minimum amount of paper for packaging.
This announcement from Coca Cola came after an environmental organization, Break Free From Plastic’s observation. The organization had named Coca Cola at the top position as a plastic polluter. In September of this year, Break Free From Plastic had conducted 484 cleanups in 50 countries. The organization had found 11,732 pieces of plastic in Coca Cola’s products.
Coca Cola had accepted the statics shown by the organization and is now looking forward to removing the tag of being the topmost polluter in the world.
