According to the reports of a new study, about 1 in 10 senior citizens in the US do not get enough food to eat. The researchers added to the survey that the people under the age of 65 that qualify for Medicare for being disabled among them at least 4 out of 10 people are living hungry.
The author of the study, Jeanne Madden of the Northeastern University of Boston, said that although there is too much hype about Medicare and how shall it be tweaked for people to get adequate access to it, the social problems concerned with hunger are some of the serious issues that need our attention at the minute.
The problem of food insecurity is not a new issue, said Madden. This inability to get enough food for the seniors of the country is regarded as a shortcoming due to the financial aspects. She added to her statement that many things are being done and measures are being taken in order to fight the situation.
The health care systems are implementing ways to screen the patients according to their problem and provide them access to several social workers including the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program initiated by the Federal Government of the US.
