High-protein beverages aren’t more effectual than simple carbohydrate sports beverages for assuaging soreness and aiding muscle recovery, as per a new study.
For the study, researchers took the help of 30 men aged between 20 to 30 years and having experience in weight lifting. They made 3 recovery beverage groups. First group of 10 weight lifters got drink based on whey hydrolysate. The second group of 10 men received a drink based on milk and the last group received one flavoured carbohydrate drink.
The researchers then asked the men to perform power and strength assessments which included squat jumps, bench press among others. After the assessments, the men were asked to drink their respective beverages and then return back for a re-test post 24 and 48 hours. All the lifters showed major boost in muscle soreness levels 24 as well as 48 hours post their assessment sessions. Moreover, all the lifters also had reduced levels of muscle function and power.
However, the surprising part was that there wasn’t a difference in recovery or soreness performance between all the three groups.
Thus, as per the researchers, one should eat a healthy diet the entire day and bank on commercial recovery beverages only when he/she really requires them.
