Seattle-based UW Medicine is developing a new brain institute to study how to handle common neural disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and depression thanks to $50mn donation it received from Bellevue philanthropists Mike and Lynn Garvey.
There comes a point where nearly every family suffers from a brain disorder like addiction, depression and Alzheimer’s, said Lynn. These health diseases are very devastating and common and the duo wanted to help by doing something, Lynn added.
The Garvey Institute for Brain Health would be working on 3 projects in its initial 5 years, as per a media release by UW Medicine. Those projects are brain wellness and cognitive aging, effects of emotional and physical trauma on brain and lastly addiction.
The Garvey Institute would be developed on the current brain health clinical programs and research with an aim of improving diagnostic capabilities as well as building quicker treatments.
The donation will fund one interdisciplinary training initiative for clinicians, students and also the researchers. It will also fund a family and patient engagement as well as support team. Besides, the amount will also be used to offer resources for surgery, leadership positions and to create a space which brings the collaborators of the institute together.
