Australian beekeeper Cedar Anderson and his father Stuart have increased the global honeybee population by 10 percent with their invention called the Flow Hive. This is a hive that lets humans harvest honey without harming bees. It is a man-made bee house that looks similar to the bee hives and so the bees can’t tell apart from their own hives. It allows honey to flow out of it without harming bees.
In the older, invasive methods that were used by the beekeepers to harvest honey, the bees were disturbed, crushed or made homeless. In this new method they can just turn on the tap and let the honey flow out.
During one of the extraction mission Cedar has seen his brother getting stung by a bee. This incident inspired him to look for a new and harmless method. He and his father have spent 10 years to develop this humane and friendly way to keep bees and extract honey. Their new invented method is so non-invasive that they don’t need to even wear bee suits any more during the harvesting process.
The flow hive has become the most popular crowd-funded campaign in Indiegogo’s history that has raised $12 million. Now the duo has distributed over 51,000 hives around the world. They want to inspire people to take up beekeeping. This has increased the global honeybee population by 10 percent! They have been donating all the profit made in this business to create and protect pollinator habitat in Australia and the U.S.
