Lead actor of the 1995 film Babe James Cromwell became a vegan after the film. The film Babe is about a brave pig and a farmer. The farmer saves the pig from being killed for food. Since 25 years Cromwell has been working with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) on various projects. Last year during a PETA protest the 79 years old actor was arrested for protesting against a Texas A&M laboratory’s dog testing practices.
A press release by PETA states that Cromwell has sent a letter to the makers of Marshmallow Peeps called by the name ‘Just Born’ urging them to switch from animal products to use of vegan gelatin and products in the traits they make. The product, Marshmallow Peeps, is made using 3 major ingredients- Sugar, Corn Syrup and Gelatin. The gelatin used in the peeps is primarily made from the connective tissues of horses, pigs, and cows.
The company, Just Born, had also recently released a statement informing their patron that there won’t be any Peeps for the coming Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. They will be directly coming out with their production during Easter 2021 as due to coronavirus the production has been delayed.
PETA has thus chosen a perfect time to convey their message to the company. They are saying that people are demanding vegan food all over the world. The demand is quite high so it will be great for Peeps business too if they switch to vegan gelatin. As there is time for the production to start this is a great time to opt for the alternative.
Cromwell in his letter to the President and COO of Just Born, David L. Yale said, “… it would be easy to replace gelatin in Peeps with a vegan ingredient such as Geltor’s vegan gelatin when full production resumes as making this switch would broaden your product’s appeal, opening up a whole new market while losing none of its taste.”
