On the occasion of Biodiversity Day, Bernat Añaños, co-founder of Spanish startup Heura has asked people to understand the destruction caused by livestock production and shift to a plant based food lifestyle. He stated there have been reports since 2017 stating clearly how environment is getting destroyed due to the consumption of livestock food production.
WWF report states that eco system is getting degraded and bio diversity is getting lost. The 60 percent of all biodiversity loss across the planet can be traced back to livestock production. Around 110 animals and insects species were lost from rain forest destruction. The expanding crop land and pastures is the main reason of ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss the reports say.
According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the livestock utilizes around 80 % of Earth’s agricultural land. But when it comes to producing food they make less than 20 percent of the world’s calories. In a statement released by Bernat Añaños he mentioned that if all reduce the animal meat consumption by 50 percent, they can save 4.45 million square kilometers of cropland that can be used for agriculture.
Añaños further shares that we citizens of the world can solve the concerns in terms of biodiversity, climate change, and hunger by creating a more sustainable food system like reducing livestock production and multiplying the legumes and cereals production capacity for human consumption by 2.5. That is how we can take care of the planet and our own health. The reports depicts the incoherence of our current food system and he urged everyone to make the transition now before it is too late.
