A few days back, Unilever company, stated on their official website www.unilever.com that it is there bold commitment to make healthier and sustainable food affordable to everyone includes growing a one billion Euro plant-based business.
Many reputed brands such as Ben and Jerry’s; Hellmann’s and Magnum, will help Unilever to push the corporate’s estimated five-fold sales growth by the year 2027.
Unilever had acquired a new product, The Vegetarian Butcher two years back, and is now planning to launch the product for sales. The Vegetarian Butcher is solely a plant-based product. The main reason behind the launch of this product is to stick to the commitment, “to make healthier and sustainable food affordable to everyone.”
Not only this, Unilever has announced other targets as well as commitments such as halving the wastage of food in direct operations to a shelf by the year 2025.
Apart from it, Unilever has also pledged to lower the calorie, salt, and sugar content in the products, so that people are accessible to healthy and nutritious food.
During an interview, one of the media channel reporters asked with curiosity, that,” why reducing meat consumption is essential, and why one must shift to plant-based foods and not other foods?” To this, Unilever answered that animal agriculture is the second-largest contributor to carbon emissions as well as greenhouse gas emissions, after fossil fuels. Apart from depletion, it also causes deforestation, air and water pollution, and biodiversity loss, leading to long term effects. Meat consumption is growing day-by-day, and it’s neither healthy for an individual nor the planet. So, we must shift to plant-based products, as
they are a rich source of nutrients and are anytime a better diet for our health as well as for the planet’s health.
Our Last Thoughts
If we want more people to consume plant-based products and that people shift from meat products; it is our responsibility to make more options accessible to people, at an affordable price, and without compromising much with the taste.
To this, Unilever added that its sales target would result in the broader range of vegan options and would be accessible to everyone across the globe at a very affordable price. The president of Unilever’s food and refreshment business, Hanneke Faber said that the initiative and pledges taken by the company would help the world figure out, the different alternatives of plant-based products, over meat; and will also encourage people to eat plant-based food.
She further added that they would take every possible step to save the planet and depleting nature, and would not lose the plant in any condition.
She concluded by saying that they are at the very beginning for dairy and meat substitutes, which seems very tiny in front of the diversified options available in the market for the meat and dairy products. But they will surely pave a way to bring a lot of many substitutes in the market over some time, to achieve the target set by them successfully.
